Our Neonatal Unit
The Royal Bolton Hospital is becoming one of the three specialist centres of excellence in Greater Manchester, caring for the smallest and most vulnerable babies who require the highest levels of care. Through an ongoing programme of investment we are expanding our services by developing new facilities, enhancing training and improving staffing levels.
Purpose-built new neonatal unit
We have built a brand new specialist Neonatal Critical Care Unit (NCCU) to provide the highest level of care. The new facilities include:
- 17 critical care cots
- Specialist high-tech equipment
- Extra space for parents including a dedicated feeding room
- A dedicated entrance
- A new nurses station
As the new unit operates normally, the former Special Care Baby Unit (SCBU) is being completely refurbished and will reopen as a 22 cot unit. All of the building work is due for completion during 2011.
The best care
Babies who are born too early or are poorly need specialist one to one nursing. We have expanded our team, as part of an ongoing recruitment and training programme, to provide more dedicated neonatal nurses and doctors. Specialist roles have been created to ensure that the skills of all Neonatal Nurses remain up to date.
Neonatal transport team
A specialist neonatal transport team, staffed by experienced doctors and nurses, will transfer poorly babies between hospitals when it is required, including any needing to be transferred to and from the Royal Bolton Hospital. Transport is provided in ambulances with purpose-built incubators. This service is provided by our colleagues at the Greater Manchester Neonatal Transport Service (GMNeTS).
