Hospital already carrying out David Cameron's nursing recommendations

The Royal Bolton Hospital has welcomed David Cameron's focus on quality nursing care and is pleased its nurses are already carrying out many of the actions he is recommending.

For instance the hospital has hourly care rounds, patients and public representatives carry out inspections and checks are made to ensure that patients have enough to eat and drink.

The hospital has an "exemplar" programme supporting standards of high quality, safe care and there are matrons and ward managers overseeing this. There is a monthly "100 voices" programme in which 100 patients are asked about the quality of their care and actions are taken where needed. The Trust's internationally acclaimed Bolton Improving Care System has helped staff to avoid wasteful practices in order to concentrate on patient services and hospital staff won numerous awards last year, including the Nursing Standard Nurse of the Year and runner up in the Nursing Times Nurse of the Year award.

Senior nurses, including Chief Executive Lesley Doherty and Chief Nurse Dee Sissons, get back into uniform and do shifts on the wards so that they can see for themselves the care patients receive.

Mrs Sissons said the Trust was always keen to deliver high standards of patient care, dignity and respect.

She said: "At Bolton we expect all our staff to provide the level of high quality care they would wish for themselves or their family, but we’re not complacent so we are continually looking for improvement. We are already planning to launch a care pledge with our staff in the next few weeks in line with the Royal College of Nursing’s Care Campaign."
